About Cambodia

Cambodia is a small yet deeply captivating country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Covering an area of 181,035 square kilometers, it offers a mix of fertile plains, lush countryside, and ancient heritage sites. The climate is generally hot and humid, with midday being the warmest. Temperatures usually range between 27 and 35 degrees Celsius, while the cooler months from November to January average around 25 to 32 degrees. The country has two main seasons: the rainy season from May to October and the dry season from November to April.

The Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake are the lifeblood of Cambodia, providing abundant fish and natural resources that sustain communities across the country. Beyond its natural beauty, Cambodia is also home to a long and vibrant history, most famously represented by Angkor Wat — the largest religious monument in the world and a symbol of national pride. The capital city, Phnom Penh, blends traditional charm with modern life and stands as the country’s cultural, political, and economic heart.

Visa / Entry Requirements

Before your flight, make sure your visa is ready. Most travelers can easily apply for an e-Visa online via the official government website, www.evisa.gov.kh. You’ll need a passport valid for at least six months, a recent passport photo, and a small fee of around 36 US dollars. The e-Visa is typically processed within three business days and allows a 30-day stay in Cambodia.

If you prefer, you can also obtain a visa on arrival at major international airports such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Bring a passport-sized photo and pay the visa fee in cash, as US dollars are preferred. For longer visits or business purposes, consider applying for a Tourist (T-class) or Business (E-class) visa through the Cambodian embassy or consulate in your country.

Type of Visa for Cambodia trip

  • Tourist Visa (T-class): Can stay  for 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days.

  • E-Visa: Cambodia offers an e-Visa, which can be applied for online before arrival. It is valid for tourist purposes only and allows a single entry for up to 30 days. This type of Visa is not allowed to extend. Usually, travelers have to leave Cambodia and reapply for a new visa to get in again if they want to stay in Cambodia longer.

  • Visa on Arrival: Visitors from most countries can obtain a visa on arrival at major airports and land borders. You will need a passport valid for at least six months, a passport-sized photo, and a visa fee (usually $30 for a tourist visa).

Arriving in Cambodia

Cambodia currently welcomes international travelers through two main airports. Techo International Airport, located near Phnom Penh, is a brand-new and modern gateway that recently opened and is one of the largest airports in Southeast Asia. The Siem Reap Angkor International Airport serves as the main entry point for visitors coming to explore the temples of Angkor.

When you arrive at the airport, the first step is immigration and visa processing. If you already have an e-Visa, you can go directly to passport control. For those who need a visa on arrival, head to the Visa on Arrival counter before immigration, fill out the form, and submit your passport, a photo, and the visa fee. Ignore individuals offering “VIP visa” services, as they are unofficial agents trying to charge extra fees.

Before your trip, complete the e-Arrival registration at www.arrival.gov.kh and show your QR code to the immigration officer upon arrival. Once you’ve cleared immigration and collected your luggage, proceed through customs and exit the airport to the arrival gate, where transportation options are available.

Transportation from the Airport

If you land in Siem Reap, plan your airport transfer in advance. The new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport is about 50 kilometers from the city center, and the drive usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes. The most convenient option is to take an airport taxi, which can be booked upon arrival or through your hotel, costing around 30 to 40 US dollars. Shuttle buses are available but are slower and less convenient if you are in a hurry. For a private and flexible ride, you can use Grab, Cambodia’s version of Uber.

Essential Travel Tips

While in Cambodia, you will notice that both Cambodian Riel (KHR) and US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted. It is always a good idea to carry small bills, as change can be an issue. When using US Dollars, make sure your notes are clean and untorn, as damaged notes are often rejected. Although using Riel may seem challenging at first, it can make transactions smoother once you become familiar with the notes.

Tips for culture awareness

Understanding local customs and etiquette is equally important. Cambodia’s culture is rooted in respect, humility, and community. When visiting temples, dress modestly with your shoulders and knees covered.

Speak softly, especially in religious or sacred places, and avoid public displays of affection. Never touch someone’s head or use your feet to point at things or people. When interacting with monks, show respect by avoiding physical contact and by not sitting or standing higher than them.

Always approach interactions with an open mind and avoid making assumptions based on your knowledge from home. Instead, open to learning, especially learning a few simple Khmer greetings or trying local food can make your experience more authentic and memorable.

A Journey Beyond Travel

Cambodia is not just a destination to visit, it is a place to experience. Every temple stone, every smile, and every shared meal reveals something deeper about life and connection. As you plan your journey, travel not just to see, but to understand. Let your curiosity lead you, your heart stays open, and your presence brings something positive to the places you visit.

At Skual Tours, we believe travel can transform both travelers and the communities they meet. We invite you to explore Cambodia with intention, to experience culture, connect with people, and contribute to the preservation of living traditions. When you travel with Skual Tours, your journey goes beyond sightseeing. It becomes a story of understanding, reflection, and lasting memories that stay with you long after you return home.

Skuals

Skual Tours was born from a simple belief: meaningful travel is not measured by how many places you visit, but by how deeply you connect with them.

Our founder, Simony Pech, began his journey in tourism in 2014 as a guide trainee. Over the years, he worked across different roles, from tour guiding to outdoor education, walking alongside travelers, communities, and fellow guides. Through these experiences, one question kept returning: What makes a journey truly meaningful?

The answer was never just landscapes, temples, or itineraries. While Cambodia is rich in history, architecture, and natural beauty, these elements alone do not define the experience. What leaves a lasting impression is human connection, the warmth of a greeting, the rhythm of daily life, shared meals, quiet conversations, and stories shaped by resilience.

When people think about travel, a few common questions are often asked: How many places have you been? Where is the best spot for photos? What is the best food to try?
