We create experiences, not just activities

Traveling often sounds exciting and fun. When we travel, we enter a new environment that is different from the one we live in every day. Instead of our usual routine, the morning begins differently. There are new places to explore, new activities to try, and new people to meet.

While travel can be exciting, we should also remember that being in a new environment can sometimes bring a sense of stress or discomfort. Everything feels unfamiliar, language, culture, food, and even simple daily interactions.

In this article, we want to talk about travel experiences from a tourism perspective. Through our work and years of meeting travelers, we have noticed an important difference between experience and activity.

We see it this way: experience is the expectation of travel and activity is the action of travel.

Why is this important?

When travelers visit a new destination, they often have only a limited understanding of the place. Their expectations are shaped by research, travel blogs, social media, or guidebooks. Based on this information, travelers imagine what kind of experience they hope to have.

For example, they might want to explore historical sites, learn about local culture, taste traditional food, or meet local people. These expectations guide them in choosing activities that seem to match what they want to experience.

Tour providers, on the other hand, design and list their activities. They explain where guests will go, what they will do, and what is included in the tour. Because they know the region well, they often design tours based on what they believe travelers are looking for.

However, what we often notice through this action is that many activities are created mainly to match traveler expectations. The experience is shaped to fit what travelers think they want, rather than what the place itself naturally offers. When this happens, the activity may become less authentic and less connected to the real character of the destination.

A Different Approach

We would take a slightly different approach. Instead of shaping a place to fit traveler expectations, we focus on what the place itself has to offer. We design experiences that grow naturally from the culture, stories, and everyday life of the community.

We believe that our role is to help guests understand this environment and feel comfortable participating in it. Through storytelling, conversation, and thoughtful facilitation, we guide travelers so they can engage with local life in a respectful and meaningful way.

In this way, travelers are not just observing a place but they are participating in it.

Creating Experience

A meaningful travel experience does not happen automatically. It requires thoughtful design and skilled facilitation.

Tour providers play an important role in creating the conditions for these experiences. Guests often need guidance to understand a place, ask questions, and reflect on what they are seeing.

A good guide knows how to share the right knowledge at the right moment. They create a comfortable and respectful environment by engaging in any activities with their guests and provide their important context of activity in advance. They help guests connect with local perspectives based on their local knowledge

When these elements come together, activities can transform into something deeper, a meaningful experience that stays with travelers long after the trip ends.

At Skual Tours, our goal is to design travel experiences that allow visitors to connect more deeply with the places they visit. By focusing on what a place truly offers and by carefully facilitating each moment, we believe travel can become not just enjoyable, but also enriching and memorable.

Skuals

Skual Tours was born from a simple belief: meaningful travel is not measured by how many places you visit, but by how deeply you connect with them.

Our founder, Simony Pech, began his journey in tourism in 2014 as a guide trainee. Over the years, he worked across different roles, from tour guiding to outdoor education, walking alongside travelers, communities, and fellow guides. Through these experiences, one question kept returning: What makes a journey truly meaningful?

The answer was never just landscapes, temples, or itineraries. While Cambodia is rich in history, architecture, and natural beauty, these elements alone do not define the experience. What leaves a lasting impression is human connection, the warmth of a greeting, the rhythm of daily life, shared meals, quiet conversations, and stories shaped by resilience.

When people think about travel, a few common questions are often asked: How many places have you been? Where is the best spot for photos? What is the best food to try?
